Checking off the many boxes

Red pencil and questionnaireWhen you think about having a child, either biological or through adoption, there are many things you need to think about. You need to think about the following:

  • Where will the child sleep?
  • Where will the child go to school?
  • Who will our child play with?
  • How will we transport our child to all necessary activities?
  • What kind of values will we raise our child with?
  • Who will take care of our child in the event we are no longer able to do so?
  • Can we afford a child?

These are some of the questions I have been thinking about as we start thinking about the process. There is so much to think about it can be a bit overwhelming at times. It has made me question, on more than one occasion, if this is the right thing to be doing.

As we look at the list I think the biggest thing I can do is take it one thing at a time. I’m trying to not ¬†get overwhelmed by the things that need doing. It might take longer, but as long as we are slowly working through the list, and asking the right questions, when the time comes to bring the child home I will feel much better.

Starting down the road

winding-road-road-travelIt can sometimes sound a little corny, but like is like a journey down the road. You never know what’s going to be coming at you. When you think you’ve got things figured out you hit another bump in the road.

You wake up one day next to the person you’ve been sharing your life with for almost two years, and you think to yourself, ” I could spend the rest of my life with you.” You build a life together with this person. You share the ups. You share the downs. The gaining of new friends, and the lose of old friends.

You think to yourself something is missing in your life. There is something more we were meant to do. Then it hits you. The pang of pain you feel when your nephew leaves, or when your friends come to pick up their kids from another adventure with “the crazy uncle” that’s your heart telling you that we need to share that love we have with a child of our own.

I knew a long time ago I wanted to adopt a child, but for the longest time have put those thoughts on the back burner in order to focus on getting myself in the right place before I even thought about bringing another person into my world.

I’m alright now, and so I think it’s time. Let me be clear we are just starting the investigative process when it comes to adoption. If we decide to proceed there are a few things we need to do first.

We obviously need to move into a bigger place that has enough room for a child. We need to figure out the type of child we feel would benefit from our family. Then we need to go find said child. This is something that just doesn’t happen over night, but could take years. We are ready for the long haul.

So here’s to a twist in the road of this journey called life.
